Movie Night

Sgt. 1st Class Park and Sgt. Ramirez, from 113th HQ, arrived from KAF with supplies for us: a computer, coffee machine, printer, office supplies, and a small used refrigerator. They were both young and energetic. Even though they woke up at 0300 hours to travel to CNS, they explored the FOB, checked out the swimming pool, and played Ping-Pong most of the day.

Quinlan returned as requested, so that I could continue my evaluation of his cognitive ability and emotional state. He had a brighter disposition, and said he was sleeping better. He also met with the brigade surgeon, who prescribed another malaria medication, which we hoped would have fewer side effects. He would stay another night at CNS.

Young came back in for his panic attacks. Although initially he’d had a minor success—when he didn’t suffer an attack the evening of our first session—he continued to experience them.

“Let’s see if there’s a pattern to your panic attacks. Are you on a particular diet?” I asked.

“Yes, I take protein supplements daily. I could stop them for a few days and see if that’s it.”

I also suggested, “Every night before sleep write down five things for which you are grateful.”

“Okay.”

We also examined his stress levels and discussed different ways to release or lessen them.

Cunningham returned and with a brilliant smile reported good things over the previous few days. “Ma’am, I don’t have any more nightmares… and I decided to sign up for classes to earn my associate of arts degree. Also, I want to switch from military police to chief warrant officer.”

I was delighted with his report.

“But I seemed to have put my problems on the back burner…”

“What do you mean, what problems?” I asked.

“You know, my nightmares, my guilt for desecrating bodies.”

“Your problems have been processed and released through the tapping, and so you don’t need to remember them any longer.”

He shook his head in disbelief. “I thought it would take months to get rid of these problems. I feel a heavy weight lifted from my shoulders...”

I was so happy for him.
